It’s entirely possible to take a principled stand which also happens to be foolish.
I don’t think she’s foolish. I think she’s maintaining a bare minimum of ethical standards because she believes them to be universal truths instead of social compacts that should only bind your actions against others acting in turn.
You might call that belief naive but I wouldn’t call actually standing by your principles foolish.
Nina’s right in principle, but probably wrong in strategy at this particular moment.
She’s right because max-gerrymandering both sides is a surefire way to ensure max-disenfranchisement of voters. This is poison for “democracy,” if that’s something we still value in the US.
She’s wrong at this very moment though, it sucks but if Repugs are doing this mid-cycle then democrats must respond in kind, and the correct action would be to use this to regain power and then actually pass laws to fix gerrymandering once back in power. I don’t believe Dems will do either, unfortunately.
No. She’s just wrong. Nothing crazy or interesting whatsoever.
Americans turn over just enough DNC members every election to fool themselves into thinking a few good apples can un-spoil a bunch of rotten cores.
Is it unethical? Yes. Will the other side play fair if we keep our ethics? Hell no. Playing nice in a corrupt system is fantasy and dems need to stop pretending like following the rules will win.
Gerrymandering is always partisan, and “redistricting” is always gerrymandering. Always has been and always will be. The only alternative is a straight up popular vote, but that leads to the tyranny of the majority. So that leads us back to a perpetual argument about gerrymandering.
She’s not wrong.
A good analogy would be gun control. Obviously, the best strategy for eliminating gun violence, is to eliminate guns. No guns…no gun violence. That’s the point she’s making.
This “solution” to the gerrymandering issue, is similar to saying, “if they have guns, we need guns too”. Also, not wrong…but also not a great “solution” to the problem.
