Explanation: The Parthian Shot was a term used to refer to the tendency of horse archers, particularly those in the nomadic tradition, such as the Parthians in Persia, to fire arrows as they retreat.
Here, there’s a little mix-up over what Parthian Shot is. Surely new ammunition trials are nothing to get worked up over…?

TLDR: it seems that they originated separately but underwent convergent evolution over time (“Parthian shot” originally contained a strong additional sense of “fighting dishonestly”). Modern OED scholars seem to think that the modern use of “parting shot” is at least influenced by “Parthian shot”.
