The title is misleading. r/Minecraft is staying on Reddit, this only concerns official Mojang posts such as news and changelogs.
A few highlights:
- given that sliced_lemon is one of the lead developers at Mojang, odds are that his views are official for Mojang.
- Mojang is a subsidiary of Microsoft. This means that, while Mojang’s views might not represent Microsoft’s, at least in theory Microsoft doesn’t oppose Mojang’s views.
- The letter is all polite and professional, but at the end of the day it boils down to "we at Mojang won’t give a fuck about this place any more.
- Apparently Jeb and DB stopped using Reddit a long time ago? I couldn’t find recent comments there.
Their feedback site is a mess, so I can get why people would be discouraged from using it. But frankly I’m glad to see even corporate leaving Reddit.
Also slicedlime is in the Fediverse already. Not sure if he has an account on Lemmy, but he can be found on Mastodon: @slicedlime@octodon.social.
The subreddit isn’t closing. Mojang just won’t be posting there anymore.
Wow, the minecraft community was huge on reddit. I’m really sad to see it get dispersed. Also I really don’t think discord is a good alternative. Let’s hope the community finds a great new home…
r/Minecraft is not going anywhere. This only concerns Mojang’s official posts.
Nail in the coffin. Glad they’re getting out of the sinking ship.
They were having tons of issues with the mod team at /r/minecraft even months before any of this shit went down, with selective rule enforcement, overzealous removal, and preemptive bans happening if you ever questioned any of the modes behavior. Mojang’s community managers were aware of those issues but were not able to do anything about it. I’d guess this is an excuse to decouple from that absolute train wreck.
I suppose that makes this the better place to be 😅
