    generated $7 million in fines

That’s the only thing that matters to the city. A speed camera slows down the 5% of people that actually see it for about 100’, and the rest blithely speed on by until they get a ticket 3 weeks later. And no demerits are issued.

Build calming measures but that doesn’t generate revenue, so they won’t. They’ll just keep putting up cameras, or rather subletting the fines to a camera company that takes a cut and pays for the cameras.

Because it’s “their road”, and they feel entitled to drive however they like, without anyone telling them what to do.

It takes a special kind of scumbag to vandalize red light and speed cameras.

Why tax the rich for more tax revenue when you can target working class people?

Wouldn’t that require less stress for the general population?

The fuck does this have to do with class? A civic is just as likely to kill me as a mercedez when all the drivers on the road these days are speeding and distracted

And yes, fines should be proportional to income, or better yet, value of the vehicle (since many rich people find ways to hide their income)

I found the perfect punishment for the assholes doing this: have them pay a fine that’s the equivalent to what the camera would have generated for the amount of time it takes for the camera to be replaced.

But the person needs to pay for the camera to be replaced first, so those fines are going to add up if that doesn’t happen quickly.

Give them 60 days to pull it off, and then start charging interest.

People who do this are a direct threat to public safety, but I think jail is too easy.
