The Israeli army announced on 8 July the deaths of five soldiers and the injury of over a dozen others due to an ambush laid by resistance fighters in the northern Gaza Strip the night before.

According to an initial army investigation, infantry soldiers from the Kfir Brigade’s Netzah Yehuda Battalion were hit by a roadside explosive device. The army confirmed that rescue forces also came under fire while working to evacuate the casualties.

Among the 14 soldiers wounded in the ambush were two who were listed as being in serious condition.

The northern city of Beit Hanoun, where the ambush took place, had been heavily bombarded ahead of the army’s operations in the area, and had reportedly been secured by the Israeli military. The ambush took place shortly after 10:00 pm on Monday evening.
