Our second ever Game of the Month is Raptor: Call of the Shadows (1994 Classic Version)!
I recused myself from voting this time around, which inadvertently led to a six-way tie. So I put all of the nominees into the Wheel of Names and gave it a spin, and Raptor came out on top.
It’s currently available on Steam and ZOOM Platform for US$4.99, or free to play over at archive.org, where it is described as a
futuristic arcade shooter where you take on a number of increasingly difficult missions culminating in a boss level. Lots of enemy types, and a vast array of weapons you can buy to help you smash air & ground targets.
Looking forward to giving this one a try! Post your scores! Grind those 1cc’s! Share your tips and tricks!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I hear those shadows callin’…
The music doesn’t work for me until I follow the steam guide to edit the ini and set music to sound blaster mode. I had to boot my steam deck to desktop mode to make the edit. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=701564226
One review said the keyboard controls are slower, but they feel like how I remember them to me.
are we posting scores on this thread or is there another post?
EDIT: i guess it’s not scored like a traditional arcade game, so i’m not sure what to post or how to 1cc it?
Looking at the structure of the game, I’d say a 1cc would be beating all of the missions without dying… so kind of a segmented 1cc?
Person with the most no-death stages wins?
(… maybe we don’t award medals this month 😅 )
Cash would probably work since it’s really a measure of efficiency? But you’d have to not replay waves for that…
Woo! I played a bunch of this one in the '90s but you all will find it too easy, even on hard mode, I bet. But the sidebar said all levels welcome, so here we are :)
i found this to be incredibly difficult and i can’t get past the first mission (bravo whatever) on normal difficulty.
My home Lemmy instance died so here I am on another one.
Any particular wave in Bravo that you’re having trouble with?
Phase shields recharge very slowly when not firing, if I recall - but it’s been a while. You can stack phase shields. Buy phase shields.
Swap alternate weapons as needed. You get cash per explosion so send an air-to-ground missile into a building before swapping back to air-to-air. You get air-to-air, air-to-ground, and dumbfire (AA+AG) for free pretty quickly.
The auto aiming machine gun is great, I was doing a veteran run on my Steam Deck just now and I think I got it on Bravo wave 4ish? Maybe 5? It’s worth saving for because it lets you hit targets indirectly. I sold my mega bombs to manage it.
The mega bombs destroy bullets but that’s no surprise I figure. Watch for the delay. I don’t use them very often but I should. While I’m mentioning tips you probably know - prioritize avoiding fire over kills. The bonus yellow plasma pickups aren’t worth taking a hit for imo.
And running into stuff hurts a lot.
I saw a review that said the keyboard controls were slower than expected. They’re how I remember them but maybe you’re bumping into that? I think it said putting Controls=1 in the ini was a fix?
I’ll revisit it but I think it’s a matter of weapons feeling underpowered and controls feeling laggy. nature of the beast with DOS games, though
