      Not to be a debbie downer, but it’s possible the bunny has been thriving in areas where humans weren’t, and their reappearance means that we are either encroaching upon their sanctuary, or we have flushed them out of it by destroying it. 120 years is a long time to be completely hidden from people.

        If you read the article, it sounds like the locals knew it was there, they just didn’t know it was rare/extinct. Further, the locals, now knowing its rare, have agree to change practices to help preserve it. So still uplifting!

          If they have to. For the most part the importance for rabbits is habitat not subsistence hunting. They’re quite adept at filling their niche despite predation pressure. They just need the niche.

            Yeah, “we will hunt them less” is nothing if they build roads & houses, change/“manage” the forest.
