Alright refugees!
I reckon we need to have a threat to chat. About stuff. With reddit ‘closing’ for the next few days in some cases, and foreseeable in others, I felt like this thread was appropriate.
What are you all up to today? Anything interesting going on? I already know it’s too hot.
I have been in a discussion with a colleague all day about the API controversy, instead of working. We have been talking about how Lemmy feels like what Reddit once was; a community of people that have interesting discourse around interesting topics, and not just an endless scroll of low effort posts and lower effort comments like ‘THIS!’, ‘AND MY AXE!’, or ‘I ALSO CHOOSE THIS GUYS DEAD WIFE’.
I think I have been grieving the what Reddit once was for a much longer time than I realised. Lemmy feels like home, one that I haven’t haven’t been able to visit for years.
My husband has been following a discord channel of each sub going dark like he’s watching the races. Chuckling about sub names and citing the user numbers/stats
We all learned about a lot of very specific porn subreddits while watching that lol! At least I assume that’s where your husband learned about them.
Anyone else think it’s too hot for tea? I really want a cuppa but in this heat it’s just not the same.
Agree! I don’t know how people do tea in this weather, and I love tea.

You can make cold tea, like coldbrew coffee. just put the leaves in a container and soak overnight in the fridge. serve with ice, very refreshing. To make it easier you can put it in a cafetiere, and use the filter from that to pour it out. Also tea is still drunk plenty in countries with much higher average temperatures.
I’m in the US, pretty addicted to my cold plain black tea, make it myself, it goes EVERYWHERE with me!

Struggling to come up with ideas for dinner. Looking like it’s gonna be another chicken fucking salad. Can’t bear to cook anything over the cooker. Might even just get sandwhich stuff which has the benefit of being able to tell the weans to make their fucking own dinner for once.
Pasta salad? Gazpacho soup?

Air conditioned office is a little bit chilly today, but at least all the bastard pollen is being kept at bay. Went to a park on Saturday and my eyes exploded.
Was paddleboarding yesterday and it was so nice just to slow down.

Its definitely a mixed blessing. My old office used to regularly get to 30+ degrees. This one has AC which does well to cool the room but everyone wants it a slightly different temperature.
I may have accidentally stayed up all night to watch the meltdown and am now dead. Worth it to be there for the moment /r/funny went offline though (at like 5am, omg I am too old for this sort of thing!)
Today is gonna be rough, I have to somehow perk up enough to record a YT video and seem like I’m happy about it.

What was there to watch? Genuinely curious - I would never have thought to do this because I assume that one minute there were jokes in /r/funny and the next minute it was just a message saying it was private? Or was there more to it than that. Good for you for staying up for it regardless - the world needs more people as committed to the cause as you!

Someone made a site to track in real-time all the subs going dark. On every hour, as new countries ticked over to midnight, there’d been a sudden spate of them all turning off and it was satisfying to watch but also kinda morbid and sad.
Then the site got hit by way too much traffic and wouldn’t stay up, and he had to redirect everyone to watch a stream of it on Twitch instead. Which is now also dead because the last person fixing it when it broke had to get some sleep. There were 13,000 of us watching at one point last night.

Trying to sweat it out in my home office, it’s south facing so it’s not too bad right now but I know I’m gonna be melting come 3pm.
Also, feeling a bit bad about the shit going down on Reddit but these loons brought it on themselves.
Yeah, I know it’s sad but I love reddit. Keeps me occupied when I’m bored and it’ll be sad if nothing is sorted.
I’m in Aldi! Usually do this on Saturday, but it was the wife’s birthday, so I’m experiencing a much more relaxed shopping trip than normal.
The heats not too bad with a fan tbf. As for what I’m doing today is work, but busy work as they don’t really have a project for me to get on with since I finished this one faster than expected, and the next bit is delayed.
But otherwise sleep has been a pain as this year the hay fever seems to have activated my asthma which is fun. Oh and I have massive blisters and raw skin because Dr. Martens are way worse to break in than I anticipated.
Vented the flat last night so that it’s mostly cool air. Shut the majority of the windows and blinds with some windows open on the shaded areas so it stays cool.
Seems to be working but it’s still a bit 'ot.
Working from home today, fortunately the work laptop doesn’t kick off too much heat. However, I’m having second thoughts on playing games afterwards. The amount of heat my PC kicks off is immense.
Need to find some courage to go out since I’ve run out of bread and cig papers…
My wife’s away in Corfu this week with her mother, so I took the executive decision to book today off work. Bloody glad I did, because it’s glorious.
Got a few bits to do around the house this morning, then I’m going to spend the afternoon in garden, under the gazebo with a series of cold drinks doing a bit of studying.
Precious, precious alone time. Make the most of it!

I’m working unfortunately! We don’t have air con and not much ventilation. I’m relying on my fan directly on me for the entire afternoon. Parked in a shaded area in hope that I don’t take my skin off later when I get in the car 😂 Spent the entire morning doing the usual British thing, complaining how hot it is!
I removed Sync from my phone homescreen and the reddit link on my browser bar.
Currently wondering how I’ll see who else is too hot and if Celtic appoint a new manager (which makes me think someone needs to start a lemmy.scot instance for things like Scottish football…)
I was thinking of creating a Scottish lemmy instance, but someone seems to have bought both lemmy.scot and feddit.scot domains. I hope they actually do something with them, but seeing they have bought both of them, it doesn’t seem promising. Any other .scot domain ideas would be nice.

oh thanks, I like it. I think it sounds a bit odd, but it makes sense, and it doesn’t seem to have any other notable uses. I will update you on my progress.
