      In the spring of 1864, a Norwegian who served in Hatch’s Minnesota Cavalry Battalion wrote a letter to Fædrelandet where he described how two Indians on their way to negotiate with the whites had been brutally murdered. “How can one expect to make peace with the Indians when one shoots and mistreats those of them dispatched to discuss and settle for peace?” the Norwegian cavalryman wrote.
