Hey everyone, from the team:

Hello everyone,

We’re happy to announce the release of Docs in Proton Drive starting today - an end-to-end encrypted collaborative document editor and one of the most requested functionalities from the Proton community.

Docs in Proton Drive starts rolling out today and will be available to everyone over the next few days. Make sure you’re running the latest versions of the Drive desktop and mobile apps.

We built docs in Proton Drive as a joint project with the team from Standard Notes, who shares our core values around privacy and security.

Like all other Proton services, Docs puts you in control of your data. Your documents are only accessible to you and those you share them with, and even your keystrokes and cursor movements are encrypted.

Now, you can create, edit, and collaborate on documents with your family, friends, or colleagues!

With Docs in Proton Drive, you can:

✍️ create new documents and edit them in the Drive web app

🤝 collaborate on documents asynchronously & in real-time

🙋‍♀️ see who else is viewing or editing your documents with live cursors and presence indicators

💬 share feedback using comments and replies

↕️ import and edit .txt / .docx and export in other formats like .pdf, .txt, .md, and .html

💻 access your documents securely from anywhere

All documents created with Docs have a maximum size of 50MB and are automatically saved in your current folder on Proton Drive.

A privacy-respecting alternative to Big Tech

Far too often, online productivity suites require you to accept surveillance as a condition of use. Docs is a milestone in our journey to building a better internet where privacy is the default and another important step towards advancing the mission of the non-profit Proton Foundation.

We’re eager to know what you think! Thank you for your continuous support,

Proton Team

Duuuude. This is awesome. But I still can’t edit calendar events on mobile if there’s another participant added. There are many simple things that need attention.

I hope this works well! I’m trying to De-google my self, swapped of of gmail to proton mail. However I use a lot of spread sheets for tracking stuff and being able to access those from my desktop, from my phone, where ever via Google Docs was difficult to replace. I look forward to how people feel about this.

I currently use Collabora office on mobile for simple spreadsheets, but yeah, would be great if Proton would add support for this too

Awesome! I’ve been waiting for something like this! It’d be even better if there was a Linux client for Drive.

Does this only include a word like program for creating documents and not something equivalent to Excel or Sheets?

That is really awesome, but what about editing documents on your phone or tablet?

That’s amazing, Google Docs is one of the last three Google apps I use regularly. Now I can finally ditch it.

I hope we get notes functionality too. I don’t understand why a password manager has notes / email alias stuff involved. I’d think email alias creation should be in ProtonMail and notes should be in Drive / Docs.

They acquired standard notes… There will probably be notes through that at some point through proton accounts (similar to how it works with simple login).

Maybe they’d go as far as to make standard notes just be proton notes and rebuild the UI to match Proton’s look and feel but I kinda doubt that.

It makes sense to create an alias on-the-fly in the password manager because aliases are commonly used as individual logins, same as the password is unique. In fact many password managers support aliases creation.

Agree… I paid big for a 5 year standard notes subscription when they were still scrappy and the product wasn’t really all that polished. I hardly used it because it was buggy and the UI wasn’t that great. Now, it’s amazing and I am using it regularly. That said, the price has gone up substantially. I’d like to see it become part of the proton bundle.

This is awesome! I wonder if the Proton team has looked at Delta Chat. Its an end to end encrypted messenger using email. Proton doesnt work with it because of Proton Bridge but if they forked Delta Chat they could easily have a Proton Chat messenger

They say they double encrypt, but it is more of a… You just have to trust us. They won’t release the source code. It is all about locking you in to only use their half-baked tools.
