If you don’t compare it to T2 or others it really can stand pretty good on its own . Of course its a turn your brain off movie but all the others in the series are.
T2 wasn’t. There was a lot of deep and nuanced commentary in that one, mainly on the nature and role of fatherhood. Also a lot on trauma and how people adapt to it, power dynamics, all sorts of heavy philosophical stuff.
That’s what made T2 stand out so much, more than just the cool shapeshifting machine. That’s what T3, and to a lesser extent, T1 lacked. T1 gets bonus points for coming up with the whole premise in the first place though.
