IIRC these are the first proper deaths caused by military intervention in cross strait relations since at least 1979.

I would not be surprised to see China retaliate and retaliate aggressively, particularly since Taiwan’s Coast Guard alleges that the incident occured “near Kinmen,” which is a staggering 3 kilometers away from mainland China.

Isn’t this the same shit everyone was flipping out about when China did it to Filipino fishermen who were “trespassing”? At least in that case nobody died. RIP.

No… Because China is claiming an island that is nowhere near their internationally recognized borders and on an island they don’t even have people on…

In this case, Chinese fisherman were within Taiwans EEZ. And their boat capsized as they tried to flee.

Taiwan claiming an island 3km away from China and hundreds of kilometers from the Taiwanese mainland? Perfectly legitimate.

I mean the laws of international boundaries are kind of made up, so things tend to get complicated.

For example if “claiming an island 3km away from China and hundreds of kilometers from the Taiwanese mainland?” Is illegitimate, then how do you think that applies to China’s claim over the 9 dash line?

Taiwan is not a country so they have no EEZ, they are a province of China, both Taiwan (Republic of China) and the Peoples Republic of China agree on this, the only point in “contention” is what government is the ligitimate government of China, the answer is the government of the Peoples Republic of China.

No… Because China is claiming an island that is nowhere near their internationally recognized borders

Everyone, including the Republic of China, believes that Taiwan is China.

and on an island they don’t even have people on…

Most of Taiwan’s population are Han. You shouldn’t form opinions on things you don’t know any history or context of.

        Taiwans EEZ

The boat was 3 km off mainland China’s coast and a hundred miles away from Taiwan. RoC claims the entire coast (and territory of) mainland China, nobody takes their claims seriously.

You should learn context clues to know I was directly commenting on the previous poster about China’s bullying of Philippine fishermen.

As for Kinmen island itself, it is Taiwan’s. The main Kinmen island is 7km from the mainland. The article doesn’t say where the fishermen were in relation to the island.

Kinmen is about 3km from the nearest populated, road-connected part of China (小嶝岛). The article claims that fishermen were caught within “1 nautical mile,” equivalent to 1.852km. You’re free to do the math.

Kinmen is notorious for being a KMT stronghold, which might explain why during the last election the government prevented some Kinmen residents from returning to the island to vote. There’s been a distinct policy of disenfranchisement from Kinmen by the DPP.

China claiming Taiwan doesn’t mean anything since they like trying to claim land that isn’t theirs the same way as Russia.

If anything, I’d say PRC’s claim to Taiwan is weaker than Russia’s claim to land it has held historically, is populated by Russian speakers, who’ve voted to become part of Russia, whose people are in mortal danger should Russia lose control of, and which Russia has administered for almost 2 years.

both Taiwan (Republic of China) and the Peoples Republic of China, both agree they are the same country, the disagreement is over what government they have.

Fun fact Taiwan (Republic of China) also lays claim to mongolia and more of the South China Sea than the Peoples Republic of China does

The statement accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan of using “all sorts of excuses to forcefully inspect Chinese fishing vessels, and using violent and dangerous methods towards Chinese fishermen.”

The unnamed Chinese vessel had been sailing about one nautical mile off the coast of an islet of Kinmen island, Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration said in a statement. The Chinese vessel attempted to flee but capsized.

Anyone in some WeChat groups want to share what they’re saying on this?
