    Obvs it’s going to depend on the individual deployment, but in my area:

    Miscalibrated scales that either don’t pick up items, or jank out when you try to use your own bag. And ghod forbid you move something while you’re packing your bags. Nope, not allowed. Call a staff member for assistance.

    Slow, buggy UI. Like, you have to wait for voice prompts that take 10x longer than reading the text. One place will just show you a QRCode and an OK button with no explanation. It’s to scan with the loyalty app, but fuck it confused me the first time.

    The surveillance. Oh my fuck the surveillance. Camera in your face, camera from above the checkout, camera inside the scanner, camera in the ceiling. Facerec for customer tracking / “loss prevention”. One place has started doing imagerec on produce. It doesn’t fucking work.

    Like, it -could- actually be good if it wasn’t built by the lowest bidder for companies who have already captured the market and can afford to irritate their customers because there’s literally nowhere else to go.
