Something that helps a lot is to have external speakers (even a cheap soudbar). Modern, flat panel TVs have sub-optimal speaker placement as a consquence of their size and shape. Especially, compared to old CRTs which usually had space for front-firing speakers. This physical speaker configuration is particularly harmful to the clarity of the frequency ranges typical of human speech.

Also, subtitles are a great thing and encourage literacy.
