Smaller frame imparts more recoil. The first round out is important, but if the recoil is too much, it makes it more difficult to get a good sight picture for the following shots. Concealability, comfort, and accuracy are things to consider, but practice with what you have now until you replace it.

my bodyguard 380 is so painful to shoot - I kinda want to get rid of it but to your point - I keep it around.

oh i have others. full frame 45 1911 is too big. but my 357 revolver is just perfect and clean. :)
