They’d have growth if they, 1) downshifted to cheaper, lighter, weaker mobile devices, 2) made OS for them, 3) made that OS actually usable, 4) made those devices diverse enough.
OK, I’m not sure they have any advantage over anyone in this, but here’s a business idea:
Premise:
we have chips more powerful than 80s personal computers in plastic cards,
we have need to keep selling stuff,
we have places where additional interactivity and computation may be stuffed, but aren’t due to inconvenience and enshittification,
we have input and display devices honestly in far more diverse assortment than required,
we have battery tech sufficient.
The core:
Electronic paper, disposable almost like paper, shitty resolutions and quality,
Electronic clothes parts, like locks and ventilation holes and what not,
Electronic jewelry, changing colors, ornaments and all by pressing a button,
Electronic wallpapers (physical), changing colors (don’t need to do this too often, so) by pressing a button or depending on some sensor or whatever,
Even electronic bandaids or whatever, self-adjusting ; that can be applied to everything that needs to work “smart” only once.
Basically electronic notepad, cheap almost as a paper one, is what I’d want to see the most. No “smart” functionality, other than maybe saving to a memory card. Just changing pages and writing\erasing pictures. Bonus traits - one can make it survive being drowned, unlike a paper one, for example.
These all might seem excessive, but it’s comfort and convenience stuff. They (today’s big tech) have defeated their competitors via comfort and convenience in the first place, they must understand that all this will be in demand if offered.
Just have to sell it, but if Jobs managed to sell glass pieces of soap to everyone, then electronic jewelry can be sold too.
