Today marks the start of the latest episode in the biggest international sporting rivalry in the world: The Ashes.

England and Australia fight for a 10.5 cm wooden trophy every two years and have done since 1882.

There are five matches in the series each lasting all-day for five days. This is sport at its finest.

You may need a quick lesson to enjoy it. Cricket explained in less than one minute:

btw, there is the potential for 25 days play and the series may end in a draw. This is why cricket isn’t popular in the US: there has to be a winner in everything ;)

As an American, I just can’t wrap my head around this. What’s the point then?

It’s a game of drama, of changing fortunes, of ebb and flow, and subtlety. Sometimes the result can be decided on the last ball of the last day of the last game in the series. Imagine the Indy 500 when first and second places are separated by100th of a second.

                Indeed, each to their own.

btw, cricket now comes in many formats these days due to TV pressures. The shortest version only lasts a couple of hours and even has a live band between each innings.
