      Looking at that I can’t help but think there’s a horseshoe theory going for how mathematical a subject is

      Like fine art and pure mathematics are at the far ends of the spectrum, but they’re both seemingly explored “because even if it’s not impactful at least it’ll be appreciated by a select few” rather than because it’s going to be impactful, whereas astrophysics, engineering, biology, architecture are at the curve of the horseshoe where they’re less high brow but more likely to be impactful
