Wikipedia@lemmy.world•English Wikipedia bans archive.todayEnglish
2·17 days agoIt’s not for sure, but one blogger wrote an article trying to track them down. They appear to be in Russia and may be affiliated with other sketchy black hat kind of stuff, but nothing is certain. Clearly the owner of archive today was upset by being investigated by a blogger, and started a harassment and DDOS campaign in response.
I myself use archive today quite a bit. I use a browser addon to get around paywalls which queries the archive (I also subscribe to a lot of news sources, but I am a news obsessive and can’t possibly afford to subscribe to all of them!) So I would be sad if they went away, but it would be great if someone could fork the archive or take it over.
I think a group of Wikipedia editors was already working to remove archive.today links where possible, moving them to waybackmachine or other alternatives when available. At least, several articles I watch had such activity. The thought was since archive today is being investigated by the FBI and may not continue as a going concern, it shouldn’t be woven in to Wikipedia. I personally agree with that sentiment. But this new issue of the Archive Today admin being sketchy and black hat in nature, using the site itself to conduct DDOS attacks, has made the process of moving more urgent.

politics @lemmy.world•Senator Mark Kelly says he will 'seriously consider' running for president
2·22 days agoYeah, I am glad Minnesotans defended themselves. I just am very concerned about a cycle of mutual retaliation and cleansing getting kicked up.

politics @lemmy.world•Senator Mark Kelly says he will 'seriously consider' running for presidentEnglish
1·22 days agoI don’t think he can unilaterally seize power, because you’re right: not enough Republicans would support such a scenario. But I am concerned he can screw it up enough that no one will be able to accept the outcome. And as we saw with Minnesota, he can make an example of some cities and enrage enough people to trigger broader civil unrest.

3·22 days agoInterestingly, the talk page of that article is locked in heated debate about whether it really originated in Canada. I don’t have a pie in this race, but it was entertaining seeing the passionate search for evidence. Doing god’s work seeking the truth

7·22 days agoI myself am quite worried there will be no election this fall. I am preparing for potential mass civil unrest this summer. But we can’t let these psychos win in advance. They want to live in an autocratic country. It’s important to keep the flame alive

6·28 days agoI started with Raspberry Pi and Arduino for a scientific project that later became a published paper. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0278752
Now I have a couple Pis and ESP32s around the house doing all sorts of jobs, and am managing Docker-hosted shiny dashboards at work
I’ve tried a couple of them and while they didn’t taste bad to me, they definitely weren’t coffee and I didn’t have any urge to seek them out again. I was amused by James Hoffman trying a bunch of them though!
I do like chicory though, as a big fan of bitter.
