The blood of our enemies.

The blood of our enemies.

I will eat lasagna every year for Christmas dinner until I am in the grave, and I am perfectly fine with the fact that I was bullied into this by all the Italian ancestors who came before me because lasagna is delicious.

Forth is arguably an example of a truly untyped language.
The good news however is that the FDA takes Listeriavery [sic] seriously […]
…so far.

The whole reason why an entire instruction was added to ARM to facilitate conversion to integers is because people need integer semantics from their numbers and so the language has to support this efficiently. Thus, in practice there already two number types, it’s just that they have been merged together in this incredibly messy way so that you have the worst of both worlds.

It is the 0-th element after the start of the array. 0-based indexing is very common in both mathematics and computer science.

What does it mean to access the element at index π of an array?

Thank goodness there was nothing more useful we could have done as a society with all of the tens of billions of dollars that was spent on this project, or it would have been an incredible waste!

There are tons of languages that let you represent integers directly as integers rather than having everything be a float so that you do not have to worry about this problem at all.

More accurately, what they have learned is that wars have a cost, so they should not be fought lightly.

The author does not say never to speak up, just that one needs to be strategic about it.

If only we had built the web on top of a language that did not have such insane handling of its numbers in the first place…

You make a good point. Can I join?

I am just pointing out that AI is going to decline whether you choose to join it or not.

Why bother? AI is going to do that already.

If by “advancing against Russia” you mean that a bunch of countries were extremely eager to sign up when given the chance, then arguably its Russia’s own fault that they felt the need to join a defense alliance so that their sovereignty would not be threatened in the future. And given that Ukraine has been invaded multiple times by Russia exactly because it does not have a NATO mutual defense guarantee, it sure looks like they had the right idea.

It might surprise you, but I do not actually get paid to post comments on Lemmy for living, so I am allowed to focus on the part of the argument that I think is strangest.
The author of that comment was free to reply in turn by something along the lines of, “Fine, then drop Ukraine from the list, because I don’t need it to make my point.” Instead, they doubled down that it belongs there.
Agreed. However, in fairness, if a person goes to the bathroom to poop then one probably will have forgotten by the time they left the room, but if instead a couple looks at each other meaningfully, excuses themselves for a bit, and then returns slightly flustered, then one will have a harder time forgetting.
As another example, if one sees a member of the attractive sex naked, then the first visceral emotional response will be to their sexiness and not to how efficiently their butt could be used for pooping.
So the analogy doesn’t quite fit, and that explains why sex-adjacent things can trigger sex parts of the brain, even when this reaction is undesired, which I think was the point of the comic–not to make some kind of grand statement about the propriety of telling people that you are trying for a baby. (And really, in the end, it is just a dumb joke, and in my opinion the slobbering detracted from the humor value so it was not executed as well as it could have been.)
Or maybe… it is just a dumb joke?
I’ve seen this exact comic circulate on Lemmy before. I think it is mildly amusing because it has the dumb kind of humor that I like, but the slobbering kind of made it weird which detracted from the humor value.
I really wish that my parents had mentioned much earlier in my life that mental illness runs in the family and what the signs were so that I could have started getting treatment right away, rather than wasting years of my life confusing feelings of depression for proof that I was a terrible person. (Just to be clear, there was no malice involved; my mom just felt really self-consious about it, so she did not want to bring it up.)
