Given that people playing this have GPUs, why not run the AI model locally? I can’t imagine it needs to be a very large model.

That’s fair, shutdown service + backup everything is certainly more guaranteed to work properly.
With Immich I’m not too worried about the DB potentially being off since it can rescan the filesystem, but I also backup at 3am when nothing is happening on Immich because I’m asleep!

If you have someone far enough away, with fast/reliable internet, and a safe spot to put it.

Immich uses user/YYYY/MM folders on my setup, and I exclude any thumbnail directories from the backup too. So not many dirs/files to check for the backup software and it’s very quick.
You don’t need to shut it down, pg_dump works fine while it’s like if you want to make sure it’s a good database backup. The files side of things are fine either way.

I have a storage box with hostbrr for my ~800GB of files. They have deals sometimes with 4TB boxes for like $9 a month or so. Hetzner storage boxes are also sometimes on sale.
I’m not a fan on the channel either generally, but as I remember they didn’t do anything unusual? Just installed some things and the distro broke itself.
If someone can break it by just doing average things a user would do, that’s not really the users fault.

I run Immich on a cheap dell desktop I got off ebay (7th gen i5 CPU in it), it has 2 HDDs in a mirror and sends encrypted backups to online storage at Backblaze using Restic.

I did some searching and it sounds like it just wakes up slightly faster, but even in deep sleep it’s still very fast.

No idea if this applies to a lot of laptops, but on my HP with an i5-8350U every Linux distro I’ve tried seems to come configured using s2idle instead of deep sleep, and battery will drain very quickly even in ‘sleep’ mode.
If running cat /sys/power/mem_sleep returns “[s2idle] deep” then you can add mem_sleep_default=deep to your kernel args and it will actually go to sleep properly.
On Fedora this was sudo grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args="mem_sleep_default=deep" but it varies by distro.
Why it seems like every distro I’ve used has this set incorrectly I do not know, it’s baffling.

I meant for discord, if they can optimize it more with a toggle for ‘game mode’ why not just make it the default so the experience is better for everyone all the time.

People abusing cloudflare workers.

I think it’s worth it, but you could move to one of the VPS deals on racknerd (or another lowendbox.com deal), for like $10-20 a year and save a bunch.

Why not just reduce resources all the time? Why does it need to be a bloated mess only when I’m not gaming if they can just turn a switch on to make it less bloated?

What is your argument supposed to be here? It sounds like you’re throwing out ‘gotchas’ to try and prove that cars monitoring everything about us isn’t bad.

That’s absurd logic, just because there’s a thing in my life with some telemetry left over despite doing what I can to disable the rest, doesn’t mean I should just say ‘screw it’ and buy every product that monitors me 24/7.

The spyware is also something that I won’t do, never want to own a car with an internet connection.

Sounds like an utterly terrible idea.

I was interested until I hit that photo of the cockpit, my god what a horrible design.
It’s especially frustrating because I don’t think I’ve seen a single app store on a distro prominently show when the last update was for a flatpak app. Even flatpaks own website requires scrolling all the way down to the bottom of an app to see that info.
Plus the app store interfaces/apps are terribly slow and bloated, gnome software will sit in the background doing nothing useful and consume 700MB+ of RAM, searching for an app takes forever, and it will lock up sometimes while installing so you can’t continue browsing/searching for more apps. I’ve tried other stores and they all share the same issues for the most part.
Overall the whole situation is just pretty bad and frustrating. I use the terminal for flatpak updates and such, but it’s not any good for finding new apps.
