  • Get a snake to take care of the mice (there’s basically never just one). Once the snakes get out of hand, get a cat to handle the snake population. Then when the cats get out of hand, get a coyote to eat the cats. And when the coyotes start to take over, introduce mountain lions. If the mountain lion population spikes, well then you’re fucked.

  • I had a strong aversion to going to the dentist as an adult because of the cost. But eventually I settled down, got into a job that offered dental insurance, and then finally decided to go take care of a couple cavities once it became affordable enough.

The “pain-free” dentist I went to was unable to get one of my teeth numbed. Eventually after a handful of attempts, he said he could give me no more of the shots and that I’d just have to bare with him while he did the work. I felt every last bit of the pain from the drilling and the filling. I nearly passed out more than once. One of my shoes fell off during the procedure.

Now I have a phobia of the dentist and very high anxiety even going in for a check-up.

Yes, yes, and yes. This is exactly what I’m seeing happen.

Those right leaning folks who were most vocal about how Biden was at fault for the last time egg prices went up are now suddenly fully willing to blame it on bird flu and not worried about it because prices will come back down soon. And already the increasing rate of inflation isn’t the president’s fault, inflation is high all around the world, there’s little the president can actually do to control it, and it’s actually Biden’s fault. Funny how that works.

  • Here’s the deal. If Kamala had won, the C-word people would be 100% blaming it on her. If inflation had cooled, the C-word people would have been praising Trump and giving him 100% of the credit. But since Kamala didn’t win and inflation is up, it’s all Biden’s fault according to the C-words.

And truth be told, under NORMAL circumstances, it would be too early to place much blame on the new president. But that’s the thing, these aren’t normal circumstances and a lot of blame does fall on Trump.

For one, he literally promised that he’d tackle inflation on day one. Now, any reasonable person knew that was a lie, but when a leader makes that kind of statement and fails to deliver, the blame falls on that leader.

But mostly, we knew the circus was coming to town, so reasonable people took steps in preparation for the chaos. These numbers are a reflection that the circus delivered. Even if things ultimate end up getting better, chaos and instability are not good for the average American, and this is a reflection of that.

  • No matter how traumatized someone is, after a certain amount of time and emotional processing, I think it’s perfectly normal for them to allow themselves some amount of enjoyment in the small things in life. If you live every literal moment of your life wrapped up in anxiety, fear, anger, rage, etc then you’re not healthy and you’re highly unlikely to succeed. Enjoying things when times are tough is not a weakness.

  • I’d have to look it up because I don’t know the actual truth of it.

That being said, I’ve heard claims of German ancestry on both sides of my family, so I guess anecdotally that fits with what you’ve heard. A lot of my living relatives are based in places like Ohio and Pennsylvania which I believe have a lot of Dutch and German influence, so it does make sense.

On the topic of “African-American”, that’s a complex and nuanced thing that’s hardly analogous to white, Caucasian people identifying with their distant relatives such as Irish, Scottish, German, etc so I wouldn’t personally consider that being anything even remotely synonymous. It’s hard to put into words, other than to say there’s no comparison between people whose ancestors willingly came to the USA hoping for a better life versus those who were forced into it with no say on their own part.

Having said that, most multi-generational white folks don’t normally call themselves “Irish-American” or “German-American”. Those types of terms are usually only used by people, who for instance, their parent literally is a citizen of Ireland or German. Most white people whose families have been in the USA for generations toyingly refer to themselves as Irish, German, Italian, etc because of the privilege and presumption of the “American” part of it, if that makes sense.
