They’re a subsidiary of Restaurant Brands International, which is headquartered in Toronto. RBI’s stockholders are mixed—a Brazilian equity firm, Canadian banks, CPP, and, yes, some US firms. So it isn’t as simple as saying it’s foreign-owned. Some of the profits do stick around. Source, if you need some light reading.
Restaurant Brands International was created when Burger King Bought into Tim Horton’s in 2014. As 3G Holdings. That’s why everyone says US owned, they remember the purchase and subsequent decline of food quality
Thanks for the read, but that is all things I already knew. That article + sec filings show that main owner is still Brazil, second two most powerful investors (and the bulk of the remaining ones) are US.
My main issue with Tim’s is that it aggressively brands itself as Canadian. This is especially apparent if you see any of their chains outside of Canada where their whole brand is just being Canadian. Which I take issue with as they have a sprinkle of Canadian ownership at best.
Why post in Canada? Tim Hortons hasn’t been Canadian in years. All the profits leave the country due to the foreign ownership.
Perhaps because there are a ton of Tim Hortons stores in Canada?

It’s still godawful food and coffee
No argument there.
