Yep. If we were in a society where that compromise were possible, maybe there might be value in having the conversation and (I use this intentionally) sacrificing the kids who want to play sports for everyone else.

That’s the funny thing right? I’m not going to say it would be moral to say “ok no trans ppl in sports but every other trans issue we win on” - I think total victory is the best strategy - but that would at least be something without an obvious answer. Would it worth sacrificing the very few trans kids who want to play sports for the broader community? It’s not a comfortable question (and my voice wouldn’t matter in it) but there’s a real question there if every other trans issue was accepted, then maybe it’s worth the retreat on sports.

BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT IS ON OFFER. There’s no exchange for the trans sports issue. It’s not like there’s a compromise where right wing freaks lay off social transitioning in return or quit screaming about minors transitioning in general. What pisses me off so much is capitulation on the sports issue wins liberals nothing. It doesn’t actually protect people, it really just ratchet effects the issue in the worst way possible.

I should say, I’m not trans myself so this is just my perspective as a leftist in solidarity with our trans comrades, but it’s like maddening to see capitulation to right wing framing for zero return

Others in the thread basically have already said it: be proportional in a way that makes sense. When I was making way less than my partner we split rent 70/30, though I’d generally get groceries. Once I started making more than her, we made rent 50/50 but I took on utilities etc.

It’s ultimately about finding an arrangement that feels equitable.

Just to be a bit of a devil’s advocate, there’s value in broadening cultural horizons. As an example: I love me some anime and cartoons, and while they are not as stigmatized as when I was younger, they are often associated as childish.

However, I’m a grown ass millennial and have also watched The Seventh Seal and other “adult” films.

I think if you never bother to try other genres, texts, etc that’s not good even if you are hyper fixated.

This is, I think, also why the Harry Potter ppl must be disciplined even beyond the politics. If you haven’t bothered to go beyond the things you read in your youth, you’re not growing as a reader. You can have affection, nostalgia, love, etc. but part of being an adult is recognizing that those things are limited because of the youthful audience and leave things out of their stories that are enjoyable to experience.

Tldr enjoy what you like but if you only consume YA fiction (or insert thing here - anime, scifi, fantasy, genre etc.) consider broadening your taste and horizon. Then by all means continue enjoying whatever you enjoy. To some extent op seems to be articulating this best possible version, but there are ppl who haven’t gone there and need to be told to try new things
