  • How many members do you think the union actually has? You are probably dramatically over-estimating, cuz IT types seem allergic to the idea of unions for whatever dumb-fuck reason. considering people pay dues to be in unions, the more people, the greater chance of most members being employed and the less bad it is for everyone. And how many of those union people are single income households or otherwise unable to meet most of their needs from savings and stuff?

Cuz like this isn’t like unemployment, which most laid off people are already getting. This is literally a survival fund. Funds like these provide support to fill gaps to keep members from ending up homeless or dead. I’ve used similar, admittedly non-union, programs that I qualify for, and it’s not like a ton of money. You tell them what you need and why, and they give you exactly what you ask for and not a penny more. And every additional ask is a new request, usually, one that you have to justify.

  • I’m so glad people who know me have started to respond to my “what?” With just nothing.

Because it usually only takes 30 seconds or so to catch my brain up, but if I just wait that 30, I’m being rude…

They could repeat as many times as they want in that span and I won’t get it, and the repetition actually makes it harder to process for me, so them just doing nothing is the perfect ideal. If I repeat my question after letting it process, they know to repeat what they said, but the first one is usually pointless filler to keep from being seen as disengaged, which makes one seem disengaged anyway.

  • I like eating raw onions dipped in ranch.

They give me terrible heartburn every time, but I still do it cuz they are tasty af. Sweet onions like walla walla don’t have that heartburn problem as much but they also don’t make me regret my life choices, so its not the same. Red onions are the sweet spot, still regrets but better flavor-to-misery ratio.

My dad ate them like apples, but only the super potent small white home grown ones. I didn’t get this from him, at least not behaviorally, cuz I didn’t really know him from 5-18. So its either in my genes, which is my present hypothesis, or onions are just actually great.

  • Theres a place near me that sells products with damaged packaging as well as past the sell-by date. Prices are similar to grocery shopping in the 90s, so it’s where I buy most of the shelf-stable foods I eat. I balk at grocery store prices now, and just go without until I have time to make the hour and a half (one way) trek out there. Stuff like chips/crackers are a caution item cuz the oil starts to taste bad (still edible just not good), ultra-pasteurized milk starts to separate, and sauces can taste stale depending what they are made with (acocado and olive oil bases seem to be prone to this)

But otherwise its a great way to use food that would otherwise go to waste, they get stuff from indian and asian groceries as well so I get to try a lot of stuff I’d never otherwise buy due to being wildly expensive import stuff. And it saves a ton of money. And if you buy something for $1 and it sucks, you don’t feel bad throwing it away.

  • Wisconsin doesn’t have party registration at all and hasn’t for a while (though it did when I first registered, and it cant be undone or changed now, leading to the appearance that we just have a huge population of independent voters (about 1/3 at this point), and no other changes in the last 20-ish years… so if it only includes people who are registered, it misses a lot of important data. Idk about other states, I think there’s at least one other that doesn’t do party registration, but a lot of people opt to be independent if given the opportunity because they lean left and dems kinda don’t.

So I think that interpretation is probably accurate.

  • Thats a super fair stance.

Consider looking into something like freetube (pc, there might also be apps for android that do the same, I don’t know) Its logged in as an anonymous account so you can subscribe to stuff, but you can go into the settings and disable all the distractions, which is what they call everything thats not videos :) All I ever see is stuff from my subscribed channels, and if I go into the individual channels, the only thing that remains is the main videos feed, everything else (about, shorts, community, etc.) is disabled. I also have sponsor block enabled to auto-skip all promotional content including self-promo.

The algorithm is basically non-existent on freetube, in that your recommendations feed on the side of the video player is going to be mostly the same channel you are watching now, not just random shit. Maybe a few things thrown in that are closely related -like if they work with another channel a lot that other channel might come up- maybe some weird bug videos that aren’t related at all, but those are all semi-sciency so that could be from my own watching, idk, I think the dev included some basic channels for the main feed so it wasn’t empty, they don’t really change and I’ve had other people mention seeing the exact same videos in their feed, years apart. I haven’t seen much, if any, questionable or undesirable content without explicitly searching for it, though.

I find the distraction-free mode of using it to be very much like back in the day when you had to know what you wanted because there was no algorithm. Its not addictive or changing my opinions, imo, because I genuinely struggle to find new channels, what with no algorithm shoving shit down my throat, so I get what I’m looking for and nothing else. I check it a couple times a month, quickly run out of new content, get bored, and go do something else. Perhaps thats a workable option for you, as well :)

  • I used to tell people I wanted my coffee roughly the color of the outside of a plain bagel. It worked very well.

I drink it differently now so that wouldn’t work, but I haven’t been in a situation where I wasn’t amending my own coffee for decades, other than getting lattes, so it hardly matters. I do usually have to ask for more creamer, however, unless they give me a little vessel.
