Hey, I got a zero! A teacher did ask me if I was into satanism once when I was a lil kid in school, but that’s bc I had a Van Halen poster in my locker (!?) so I don’t think it counts. If someone said I was a goth I’d be like yeah sure whatever.
I’m so old in my 50s that I’m still suck using old text emoji like it’s the 90s on T9.
I’m stealth enough that I’ve never really been asked if I was goth or Satanist LOL. Just odd. Though there’s always been signs.
Nothing against fish nets, just not something I ever really dove into.
Two copies of disintegration, that’s kind of lightweight. But then I djed.
Can’t say that I have ever obsessed over vampires. Though I have a nearly complete hammer horror collection if that counts for anything. XD
I was obsessed with vampires, the lore, the movies, the books. It kept my brain occupied and helped me stay out of trouble and sane.
Lovecraft, Tolkien, Burroughs, and Lewis here. Sadly not much decent in the way of movies for much of their work till recent decades. There were some stabs at Lovecraft, Burroughs Tarzan was everywhere but bleh. Disney tried john Carter but messed up a lot, which is a shame as I prefer it. There was some animated Tolkien, I grew up on the RB hobbit movie. Thankfully didn’t find the Bakshi stuff till I was much older to appreciate it better. And Disney’s half passed narnia series. Though honestly I would rather someone found a way to adapt Lewis’s Silent Planet series.
Whatever catches your eye though there really isn’t a wrong answer.

I liked the movie, I’d rather it and the iterations than all the Marvel copies.
Oh, yeah, the movie was decent enough. Very serviceable. The failures and disaster happened all around from horrible marketing etc from Disney mostly. Maybe someday they’ll take another stab at it. But I hope that when they do they actually put someone in charge who has an understanding of the property and the companies full support. No more unclear marketing or trying to adapt stuff for fans that don’t exist. Make it for the people who want to see it and others will see it by association.
I am tired of Star Wars and Marvel movies. I want more movies about cavemen and Conan.

Heh, well Andy is OG. At the time goth was a label derisively applied by others. Not something generally embraced. Contrast with Dr Arthur Krause who formed in 2001. Who on their Facebook page said this about their music

Don’t mean a thing. Just a bit of fun. What definitely isn’t very punk/goth is gate keeping. Gotta let your freak flag fly in the way that’s right for you. Part of what made it so great besides the music, was generally being in because you were outside.

I was a goth in high school, like 88-90…because at that time there was no uniform. We were just a bunch of kids who loosely coalesced around some cool experimental music, and were vaguely anti-mainstream. The clubs were an absolute blast. Everybody was welcome. It’s was notably multicultural, and we accepted a lot of refugees from the mainstream queer community that was getting very cookie-cuter and corporate. We were so excited that there was a space where nobody judged you whether you dressed like a prep, were in a wheelchair, were into fetish, etcetcetc
…but fast forward to ~2000 and the scene had evolved into a parody of itself. Boring trance had displaced the experimental music and you had this gross mix of pop-goth and techno…and there was a distinct uniform. If you went to a club and didn’t fit the mold you would be stared at and ostracized. It really sucked, because I loved all the old goth music and the cutting edge industrial music…but I’d have to sit in the corner of the bar by myself getting scoffed at, ignored or gawked at by staff and culture gatekeepers alike. Yes, the scene had also splintered…but going to a hardcore fetish night or listening exclusively to German industrial wasn’t always my thing.
These days it’s just another mainstream identity that’s sold to people and capitalized. Every high school has the requisite amount of “goths” who somehow look exactly the same despite part of the “identity” being individuality.
Goth wasn’t strictly a thing in its own time. More of a retroactive and initially often derisive label. Even some of the big hubs, such as limelight, weren’t goth specific. Iconic? Absolutely. We were all Shore Leave the day the episode of Venture Brothers aired. And he took one of the brothers to go to the club only to find out it was now a mall. A fucking mall. LOL the last I saw it was a gym.
The 2000s definitely brought about a lot of change, not the least of which lots of us had jobs and kids. Not all of us were unmarried cat herding oddballs. Just the best of us. And these days many of us are retiring. Staying bundled up and warm as we take our medications. Not exactly going to the club. Youth culture is in a different place. Literally, like, often online.
Then there was the mainstream fetishization of aesthetic. The fantasy “goth chick”. You know, the one with black lipstick. What sort of music does she listen to? Who knows. It wasn’t about that. So then you get a lot of unironically goth clubs that are all about the look and little else. So, sure the clubs are a wasteland.
Shows on the other hand. You still find the culture and acceptance there. Go see Gary, or anything with Andy Dean. It’s still here, and will be as long as we are. Introducing new generations, evolving with them.
I never shopped at hot topic. That’s worth some cred.

ikr, besides the DM song, what’s the difference between Halloween trinkets and just ordinary “dark” trinkets? Like, I have a figurine of a cat in an occult-looking hood that I put on top of the box containing the ashes of my dead beloved, and it looks kinda like a Halloween trinket, but it’s not really? The only difference is the Halloween-specific stuff tends to be more cheaply constructed.
A good point, while a good portion of my stuff was likely bought near Halloween, that was only because stores wouldn’t have offered them at other times. Who doesn’t need a new cool skull or spooky candelabra in these trying times?
I don’t have any fishnets and I don’t know what disintegration is, but the rest… I still maintain I’m not really a goth though.

But you may be familiar with a couple songs from the album “Disintegration” that were hits: Pictures of You and Lovesong. tbh I had to look that up, I’m not crazy into The Cure since I’m not really a goth. NO wait I didn’t say that-- I DIDN’T MEAN IT STOP
