      I will always think about how in the USSR a local branch of the communist party literally called out a mining engineer for not taking his vacations or days off and went on at length about how important a healthy work/life balance and spending time with one’s family was.

        My understanding is that miners in the GDR were some of the best paid people in the country and had numerous perks and benefits to compensate them for the rigors and dangers of the job.
